Tuscany, 1682: Cosimo III dei Medici commissions a young Florentine architect to undertake a long journey across central northern Europe to make a detailed report on the buildings, machinery and equipment involved in stabilising and controlling water and utilising hydraulic energy for a variety of industrial, civic and military purposes. These documents, so far unpublished, provide valuable evidence not only concerning the Tuscan area but also the history of Italian and European science, technology and economy.
