Guglielmo Libri was one of the most prominent and controversial figures in the cultural world of early 19th-century Europe. His complex, multi-faceted personality has always attracted the attention of scholars. Libri assembled one of the largest private libraries in Europe, which included a vast archive of considerable historical value, of which the major portion is still preserved at the Biblioteca Moreniana.
