The University of Florence, formed in 1924 as a result of the reorganization of the Institute of Higher Education («Istituto di Studi Superiori pratici e di perfezionamento»), has undergone extraordinary growth in the eighty years of its existence. The four initial faculties have become twelve by the turn of the century, comprising seventy Departments and ten Specialisation centres. The level of excellence they have achieved in the Humanities as well as in Sciences and Technology rank the University of Florence among the most renowned institutions of learning in the European university system.
