A reconstruction of the lives of the workers in three plants of the Società Metallurgica Italiana in the region of Pistoia from the early 20th century to the Second World War. These plants manufactured semi-finished products, finished products in copper and alloys, as well as ammunition, and they employed a large number of women. The story concentrates on the characteristics of the work force, its organisation, the professional hierarchies and the internal conflicts, with particular attention to the relationships between the two sexes both in and outside the factory.
