All the chapters in this book tend towards - and aim to reconstruct - Montaigne's conversion to scepticism. The concept of historical anti-providence is shown to confer on human beings the responsibility of the way of the world as well as the possibility of planning political ethics. All this brings Montaigne to a re-reading of scepticism, which is now seen as an attitude to understanding that Being is discourse, and that the only "pays sauvage" is the isolated self, free from chains and "relation à autrui".
