A study on the Florentine sculptor (1803-1871) in which historical, archival and literary sources interlace to reconstruct his personality linked to the world of the Academy of Fine Arts, an artist acclaimed by sophisticated English purchasers and above all interpreter of the Piarist School’s spirituality. A parallel enquiry on the Piarist Numa Pompilio Tanzini, Costoli’s friend and art critic, throws new light on the known works of marble and plaster and presents others less known, still eclectic and inspired by the form in Renaissance art.
