By reconstructing Stefano Jacini’s political career and thoughts the author examines some crucial decades of Italy’s own political history, in an attempt to understand the circumstances that hindered the development of liberal policy and culture. With this intent the intellectual relation between Jacini and Cattaneo, the diplomatic events of the Third War of Independence and the debate on protectionism in the last decades of the nineteenth-century are all considered under a different light.
