Johann Wier, with «De praestigiis daemonum», was the first to throw a lifeline to free mankind from the labyrinth of demoniacal enchantment. By means of theological and scientific argumentation his main objective was to put an end to witch-hunting, proposing rehabilitation or exile for those who, in his opinion, were only poor old maids. This started up that long critical process which, at the end of the 17th century, brought to Balthasar Bekker decreeing the death of the devil.
