What becomes evident on examining his linguistic writings about the «matter of language» and his relationship with Manzoni and Croce is the patriotic, civil and cultural function which De Amicis attributes to language, intended as identity of the written and spoken word, fusion of 'érgon' and 'enérgeia', union of thought and expression. We discover a stable De Amicis, open to other people’s linguistic experiences but also endowed with a critical mind and able to formulate advanced intuitions.
