The enormous Egyptian granite ponds, conserved for two centuries in Villa Medici, Rome, were brought to Florence in 1789 but it was not until 1841 that they were placed in the gardens of Pitti Palace. The reconstruction of the complex operation concerning this long journey throws light on over 50 years of cultural politics, the history of taste and the success of antiquity but also on the evolution of transport methods. An up to date and comprehensive archaeological reading of the monuments is provided too.
