This book covers the origins of one of the most controversial thesis to appear in the scientific and philosophical world of Enlightenment: namely the spontaneous generation of microscopic organisms of infusions, as outlined by the English microscopist Needham (1713-1781). Needham’s work acquires an interesting and original aspect when re-read as an attempt to tackle the subject matter of the living world according to its own laws in times dominated by a mechanical image of biological phenomena.
