The function and statute of visual aid in relation to modern day scientific and philosophical knowledge form a field of research which, as yet, is largely unexplored. Various aspects of this relationship are contemplated here probing into specific and exemplary disciplinary spheres - in particular those referring to astronomy, anatomy and that same philosophical knowledge - and the way in which science is represented in pictorial works during the same period of time is also examined.
