All the contributions that appeared following the fundamental «Dichtung und Dichtersprache in indogermanischer Zeit» (1967) by R. Schmitt are collected together and critically analysed and, with the aid of the most recent cognitive research, the author proposes an innovative theory on the origins of the Indo-European poetic language, conceived as the linguistic organization of mental forms and ethic-ethnic contents of an archaic stage of collective and individual self-consciousness.
