Cognitive Archaeology from Theory to Practice
The early Cycladic Sanctuary at Keros

Colin Renfrew has been involved in pioneering archeological excavations for almost 50 years, from the first archaeological discoveries on Keros through the most recent digs at Kavos and Dhaskalio. This work has permitted him to create a ritual map of the Cyclades, delineating a network of pilgrimage and ceremonial sites in the period 2500-2000 BC. These discoveries have permitted Professor Renfrew to postulate a revolutionary cognitive interpretation of prehistoric archaeology. The analysis of the discoveries in a project involving numerous young researchers is continuing to contribute significantly to the study of the origins of ritual practices in the Aegean Sea.

Colin RENFREW, nato il 25 luglio 1937 a Stockton-on-Tees (Regno Unito), è attualmente Senior Fellow al McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research ed Emeritus Disney Professor of Archaeology all’Università di Cambridge. Nel 1991 gli è stato conferito il titolo di “Pari” a vita per il quale scelse il titolo di “Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn”. Colin Renfrew, Premio Balzan 2004 per l’archeologia preistorica, è una delle più eminenti personalità dell’archeologia mondiale, tra i promotori di rilevanti innovazioni del metodo processuale, autore di una serie di brillanti opere di grande acutezza interpretativa e di impatto rivoluzionario sempre su temi centrali della preistoria europea e mondiale.
