Costa examines the fortune of two verse translations by Alessandro Marchetti (1633-1714), a distinguished scientist and an elegant poet, who is considered a minor Italian classic: Della natura delle cose (based on Lucretius’s On the Nature of Things) and Anacreonte (based on the Anacreontics). Both of them were condemned by the Roman Catholic Church for their Epicurean materialism and sexual perversion, as appears from the documents published in the appendix, that come from the Archive of the Holy Office (now the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith).
