La via delle acque (1500-1700)
Appropriazione delle arti e trasformazione delle matematiche

The transformation of mathematics in the 16th and 17th centuries was partly due to the intellectual appropriation of the practical knowledge of the arts. The author explores this theme by discussing the work of three key figures – Cardano, Castelli and Guglielmini – and by examining the case of the science of water. La via delle acque shows that the appropriation of the mechanical arts strengthened the connection between mathematics, nature and the arts and gave a new impulse to the ancient philosophical idea of the naturalness of mathematics.

Cesare S. Maffioli
Cesare Maffioli (1946), laureato in fisica e dottore di ricerca in storia della scienza, è stato professore delle Scuole Europee di Bergen e Lussemburgo, senior fellow del Dibner Institute (Cambridge, MA) e visiting fellow dell’Istituto di Studi Avanzati dell’Università di Bologna. Ha contribuito a organizzare due convegni internazionali (Italian scientists in the Low Countries, Utrecht, 1988 e Arte e scienza delle acque nel Rinascimento, Bologna, 2001) e a curarne la pubblicazione degli atti. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni nel campo della storia della scienza tra cui Out of Galileo: The Science of Waters 1628-1718, Erasmus Publishing, 1994 e Una strana scienza, Feltrinelli, 1979.
