This study examines Machiavelli’s works according to criteria of carnival culture usually adopted for the humorous stories and comedy of the 16th century. The result is a Machiavelli with roots in Lucretian materialism and popular Florentine culture. The characters in The Prince become seasonal scapegoats who revitalize the political community. In Machiavelli’s carnival virtue is not a point of compromise between extremes, but an insistence on radical positions to achieve desired results.
