An intellectual biography of Hal Draper (1914-1990), one of the best known and esteemed twentieth century experts on Marx. A leading activist of US socialism, an “éminence grise” of the Berkeley student movement in the mid-1960s, Draper noticed that the more frequent forms of«socialism from above», from Stalinism to social-democracy, reformism and western liberalism, distorted the true meaning of Marx’s concept of self-emancipation of the working class.

Giovanni Borgognone (Torino, 1971) insegna Storia delle dottrine politiche all’Università di Torino. È autore dei volumi James Burnham. Totalitarismo, managerialismo e teoria delle élites (Aosta, Stylos, 2000), Max Eastman e le libertà americane (Milano, FrancoAngeli, 2004), La destra americana. Dall’isolazionismo ai neocons (Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2004). Ha contribuito ai volumi Il governo Berlusconi. Le parole, i fatti, i rischi (Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2002) e L’opposizione al governo Berlusconi (Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2004). È curatore del quinto volume della Storia della Shoah (Torino, Utet, 2006). Collabora con le riviste «Belfagor» e «L’Indice dei libri del mese».
