This volume provides the philological edition of «Pia de’ Tolomei», a libretto written by Salvadore Cammarano for Gaetano Donizetti (Venice 1837). The critical apparatus displays both the genesis of the text and its evolution in later authentic performances of the opera. The introduction shows how Cammarano’s /Pia de’ Tolomei /is indebted to various coeval versions of a poetic subject that, from Dante onwards, boasts a glorious literary tradition, and how the practical circumstances of theatrical production affected its writing.
