In a time of profound changes, the Groupe de Coppet, that fertile literary circle around Madame de Staël (Constant, Bonstetten, Barante, Sismondi, A. von Humboldt, W. Schlegel, de Gérando et al.) was responsible for transforming travel into a «virtue» of knowledge based on the direct observation of nature and of humankind. The literature of travel thus contributes to the common good and to the realization of a harmonious society.
Dans une époque de profondes mutations, le Groupe de Coppet, ce cénacle fécond d’écrivains réunis autour de Madame de Staël (Constant, Bonstetten, Barante, Sismondi, A. de Humboldt, W. Schlegel, de Gérando...), a contribué à faire du voyage un instrument ‘vertueux’ de connaissance, fondé sur l’observation directe de la nature et des hommes, et visant la réalisation du bien commun dans une société harmonieuse.
