Italian and foreign medievalists contribute articles dealing with a significant moment in the history of Tuscany, i. e. the period straddling the end of the thirteenth and the early fourteenth centuries, which witnessed the increasing growth of the cities and the impact of their power in Italy as well as abroad. Topics include the establishment of regional boundaries, political and territorial organisation, standardisation of municipal statutes, characteristics of the ruling classes, economic problems, architecture, family structure, landscape, and the image of Tuscany outside its borders.
