This book focuses on the institutions and elite of a territory that in Modern times was too often neglected on a public scale. During Gonzaga's dominion, Monferrato, after an initial rebellion towards the dynasty, was endowed with new structures controlled by Mantua, while the urban patriciates and feudal aristocracy adapted themselves to the requirements of the Lombard dukes in a complex game of social confrontations and ascents.

Blythe Alice Raviola, insegna Storia moderna presso l'Università degli studi di Milano. Ha al suo attivo numerose pubblicazioni sulla storia del Piemonte sabaudo e del Monferrato gonzaghesco e ha recentemente curato le Relazioni universali di Giovanni Botero per i tipi di Nino Aragno (Torino 2015, 2 voll.). Si è altresì occupata della storia della Compagnia di San Paolo in due saggi specifici e partecipando al cantiere editoriale de La Compagnia di San Paolo a cura di W. Barberis, con A.
