The notion of context is pivotal to the essays gathered in this volume as it reflects the intention of considering the Italian musical oratorio not only in its historical-geographical dimension, but moreover as the testimony of a complex cultural world subject to dialectical communication between the texts and their performances. This was the main objective of the conference research the outcome of which is conveyed in greater detail by these proceedings.
