The origins, contents and application since the beginning of the 18th century of the so-called ‘decreti di Urbano VIII’, proposed from 1625 onwards to control the devotion towards the dead with a reputation for sanctity and still in force in the Catholic church are examined in their entirety. The discussions began towards to the end of the 16th century following the failure of an attempt to canonize Savonarola in a congregation called «the blessed» whose works have been reconstructed. The debate continued in secrecy within the Roman inquisition, whose archives have been consulted for the first time.
