Isaac Beeckman usually records in his «Journal» (1604-1634) his attempts to interpret reality according to the postulates of atomism. Meanwhile he seeks to reconcile atomism with the basic demands of Christian doctrine. Of crucial interest is the way in which he reads and discusses two fundamental and opposite poles of ancient culture: Lucretius and Galen. Beeckman employs his critique from a mechanistic perspective, enriched by the new physical-mathematical orientations of his time.
