In Jean Charles Léonard Simonde de Sismondi’s variform reflection Tuscany played an important part. Since his Swiss exile in youth Tuscany was visualised as the place of origin of his family and from thence on to the eyes of Sismondi it became an example of an increasingly defined civil society. These essays aim to focus on the contents of this example and its capacity to interact with royal Tuscany at the beginning of the 19th century.
