Emilio Salgari (1862-1911) was Italy’s foremost writer of travel and adventure fiction, whose work displays the full gamut of adventurous and exotic archetypes, yet, in the Age of Imperialism, he espoused the cause of the colonized. While his heroes and heroines have always dazzled young readers, Salgari’s true protagonist, according to the author, is (Darwinian) Nature itself. This is the first in-depth critical study of Salgari’s work, seen comparatively within the international context.
